There are strong indications that Chelsea midfielder, Nemanja Matic, has completed a medical at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground ahead of his big money move to Old Trafford.
Manchester Evening News reports that while fans wait for an official announcement, a picture of Matic has circulated on social media, appearing to be wearing United training gear with the No.31 on it.
It is understood that the image is legitimate as Matic can be seen wearing the number 31 for his medical.
Training kit numbers are usually the players’ squad numbers and Matic could be about to inherit Bastian Schweinsteiger’s old number.
If this is true, Matic, 28, would be United’s third summer buy, following £31m defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica and £75m striker Romelu Lukaku from Everton.
Speaking after Sunday’s 3-0 pre-season victory over Valerenga, United manager Jose Mourinho – who signed Matic for Chelsea – said: “We are waiting for news. He wants it very much.
“I think we have a chance.”
Matic sat out Chelsea’s pre-season tour of China and Singapore – alongside Diego Costa – in an attempt to seal his Stamford Bridge exit.
His exit had been expected after the Blues signed France international Tiemoue Bakayoko, 22, from French champions Monaco in a reported £40m deal earlier this month.
The United boss was locked in a transfer tussle with Juventus over him but the Italian club gave up on the chase.
It left Mourinho with a clear path to resign his former player.
Matic could make his first United appearance in Wednesday’s friendly with Sampdoria in Dublin before a possible competitive debut in the Super Cup against Real Madrid on Tuesday week.
