Saul Canelo Alvarez is now the WBO Super-Welterweight champion of the world after he knocked out Liam Smith in the ninth round.
Smith (23-1-1 KO13) was knocked down three times as he was handed his first loss by Alvarez (48-1-1 KO34), who was at his best for the first time in the 154lbs category since losing to Mayweather on points three years ago.
Alvarez showed tremendous versatility with his punches. He landed combinations with both hands and fired right hands to the body followed by uppercuts that Smith had no answer for.
In the 7th round, Canelo knocked Smith down with a hard right hand. Smith was wide open for the shot, so it wasn’t surprising that he got dropped. Smith fought well after getting knocked down, as he took the fight to Canelo, who looked like he was tiring.
Canelo flattened Smith with a body shot in the 8th round. Smith got back up and finished the round.
It was only going to be a matter of time before Alvarez got his knockout.
Alvarez landed a brutal left hook to the body. He sunk it in, and Smith dropped to the mat in agony. As Smith was writhing in pain, referee Luis Pabon waved off the fight without a count.
