The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused management of the University of Ibadan of planning to pay academic staff only one year promotion arrears even when promotion announcement of academic staff was delayed by the management and announced almost five or four years after the person was due for the promotion.
n a statement by its chairman, Dr Deji Omole and Secretary, Dr Peter Olapegba, respectively, ASUU said the move would be resisted with all its vigour. According to the letter that had been forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor, they said the proposal is antithetical to the welfare of members of the union.
The union leaders argued that lateness in announcing promotion was not the fault of the candidates but that of the administration. While insisting that all those owed the promotion arrears must be paid in full, they warned that the proposal would not guarantee industrial peace when welfare of their members is threatened. They advised the Vice Chancellor and his team to think of ways to refine the promotion procedure so that people are promoted as at when due. It therefore asked the University Administration to continue to pay promotion arrears of academic staff in full as at when due.
